The First International Meeting on Tupían Languages and Cultures took place in Brasília on October 5–8, 2004 in the Ampitheater of the FINATEC, situated in the Darcy Ribeiro University Campus (University of Brasília). For the first time, linguists, anthopologists and geneticists gathered in order to summarize the state of art of the descriptive and comparative studies of the languages belonging to the Tupí stock, considering also their relation to available anthropological, archaeological and genetic data on the Tupían-speaking ethnic groups. Another goal pursued by the meeting was to establish a contact between the researchers of Tupían languages and cultures from one side (so that they could enhance their understanding of the corresponding cultural and social context) and the reseachers of language relationship of genetical and typological nature from another side (so that they could consider the scientific knowledge produced by anthropological, archaeological and biological studies concerning Tupían languages and cultures). The event emphasized the importance of these types of knowledge to research in historical linguistics and to the interpretation of results obtained by it.
The main objectives of the meeting were: (1) to attest important aspects of the state of art of the research in the field of Tupían languages, cultures and prehistory; (2) to collect and evaluate suggestions that could eventually provide solutions to the problems that had impeded the research in question.
The second and the third meetings of the series were held in Brasília on October 1–3, 2007, and October 20–22, 2010, respectively.
The Fourth Meeting on Tupían Languages and Cultures took place in the Federal University of Rondônia (Ji-Paraná Campus) honoring the Tupían ethnic groups of the Brazilian state of Rondônia. Its central objective was to promote the reconstructive hypothesis by Rodrigues, according to which the Urheimat of the Tupían stock lay in modern Rondônia. Notably, the Fourth Meeting saw a significant presence of the representatives of Tupían ethnic groups; many of them were scholars from the program Licenciatura Intercultural Indígena of the Ji-Paraná Campus of the Federal University of Rondônia.
The Fifth Meeting on Tupían Languages and Cultures was to be held in 2014 (tenth anniversary of the series). Unfortunately, Professor Aryon Dall’Igna Rodrigues left us in April 2014, which led to the cancellation of the fifth event of the series that year.
All the meetings of the series were marked with international participation and provided visibility to the historic involvement of the University of Brasília in research on indigenous languages and cultures, as well as its engagement to the Indians’ struggle for their constitutional rights. The support from the funding agencies (CAPES, CNPq and FAP-DF) has been fundamental to the successful organization of these events.
Not only have the Meetings on Tupían Languages and Cultures attracted renowned scientists, they have also consistently provided environment favoring the participation of indigenous scholars as well as other representatives of indigenous knowledge and their contribution to the scientific knowledge of Tupían languages and cultures.
The materials of the first three meetings were published in the form of a book. The materials of the Fourth Meeting will be published in the form book as well, thus becoming part of the 'Tupí Languages and Cultures' series edited and published by LALLI-UnB; it will be released during the Fifth International Meeting on Tupían Languages and Cultures. The books of the series are reference works that divulge the scientific production by Brazilians in cooperation with foreign researchers of the Tupían stock.
